SCIENCE LIBRARY

 

Library is the most attractive and educative place lying in the campus of an institution. A well-equipped library should be the primary requisite of every school. It is a quiet and most proper place for the study as well as storing of all types of information. Science is a subject where the teacher and the taught need to supplement their knowledge from time to time updating themselves with the latest developments and progress in the field of science and technology. The scope for updating the knowledge of teachers and the students is only possible through the books and material available in the library. However to achieve this goal first of all let the teachers find out the latest books and update their knowledge. Then they can recommend some books to their students and encourage them to acquire the habit extending and supplementing their knowledge by making proper use of science library. Science library thus can be a wonderful teaching aid for realising the demands of developmental education.

 

School library and class library

The school library is central to learning and plays key role for encouraging innovation, curiosity and problem solving. It is a catalyst for teaching and scaffolding and for literacy and reading. In some schools, a large library or media centre is not available. In these instances, a class room library is the only access that students have back to the books and resources they need. Class room libraries, while smaller than school libraries, still have great benefits for students. The books, magazine etc are still at the fingertips of the students day long.

 

Importance of Science library

 

·       It helps teachers and pupils alike update scientific knowledge.

·       It facilitate self studies' and 'learning to learn'.

·       It enrich curricular experiences.

·       It enable pupils participate in discussion and project works meaningfully. It helps participation in science club activities meaning and dynamic

·       To create interest in science as a subject of study

·       To develops concentrated reading habit of knowledgeable books

 

Organisation of Science Library

 

A science teacher must keep the following points in mind while organizing a science library.

 

1. Place and accommodation: Since most of the schools have a general library, it may not be possible to have a separate room for the establishment of a science library. It is therefore, advisable to make collection of science books and place in the respective classrooms almirahs suiting the Standard and grade of the student

 

2. Library in charge: For deriving maximum benefits and value of a science Library, the work of the in-charge may be done by the students themselves under the guidance and supervision of a science teacher. Such arrangements may occurs keen interest among students not only for the reading of science books but also for exploring sources of getting good books on science

 

3. Selection of science books and reading materials: The effectiveness of a science Library depends upon the books and reading material it possesses for its readers. In general the books and materials to be kept in the library may be categorized as below

 

a.     All the prescribed books for each stand and class.

b.    Books on discoveries and inventions in science.

c.     Books on latest developments and progress in science

d.    Books on the historical landmarks in the field of science including life history of scientists.

e.     The reference books, encyclopedias, dictionaries related to the facts and processes of science.

4. Management of Science Library: For serving the desired propose this library should be properly managed by keeping in view the things like below

 

      i.          Proper classification- It helps the readers to identity as particular books on the given Subject

    ii.          Proper service and maintenance -A lending register should be properly maintained with the name of the students date of issue of the book etc.

   Students should be instructed not to tear any picture or page from books.

Books should be protected from while ants, cockroaches etc.

 

Rules of the science library

·       For the proper running and services of the science library, there should be some fixed rules to be follow the readers.

·       Every class should have fixed day and time for getting books and returning them.

·       Period for which the book is issued should be made clear to the student.

·       There should be specific period in the time table known as library period for attending the library.

·       Rules of library should be properly displayed for the information of the readers.

 

Types of resources for accessing information

 

1. Book: A Variety of books are essential for presenting different points of view and for providing adequate experiences for the learning concepts.

·       Text books: Library should have a variety of most up to date text books in different sections of science

·       Booklets: Booklets on variety of topics, ranging from environment and ecology to latest developments in science

·        Literary Materials: Inspirational and imaginative literature.

·       Reference materials: Library should be well equipped with reference books including dictionaries, encyclopedias year book atlases maps, charts etc.

2. Non-Book: The field of science is connected with everyday life. Naturally it becomes essential that books are supplemented by periodicals, pamphlets, News papers, etc, which may help the learning of science with updating of information.

(i) Periodicals: Which throw light on current research findings

(ii) Pamphlets: Pamphlets published by various government agencies and bureaus for specialised services also are very valuable sources of information required for realizing targets of developmental education

(iii) News papers: It is essential that the science teacher and pupil keep well informed of the developments that takes place the field of science almost every day.

3. Web resources: A web resource is anything that can be obtained from the world wide web webpages, emails, information from databases etc are some examples.
