AUDIO VISUAL AIDS

Audio Visual Aids are also called instructional material. Audio literally means “hearing” and “visual” means that which is found by seeing. So, all such aids, which endeavor to make the knowledge clear to us through our sense are called “Audio Visual Aids” or Instructional Material. Audio visual aids play an important role in making the teaching learning process more interesting, effective and permanent. The aids help in stimulating the sensory organs like ears and eyes to facilitate quick comprehension of the message by audience. These can also help teachers to communicate messages or information in places where regular teaching fails. Audio-Visual aids motivate them towards the subjects they don't find interesting. It is a known fact that individuals tend to forget things. With creative methods like images of characters, objects, and voiceovers, it attracts the attention of students. It also helps them to retain what they learn.

These aids helps the students to gain a positive understanding of the topic.The conceptual learning experience stimulates self-activity in students. These aids are highly successful for students with special needs like hearing and visual disabilities. Several Audio-Visual aids are helping students with their education. Some of the examples are graphical or pictorial representation, flow charts, diagrams, etc.

AUDIO VISUAL AIDS DEFINITION

Burton: These are sensory objectives and images which stimulate and emphasis on learning process.

Carter V. Good: It is a trainable (motivation, classification and stimulation) process of learning.

Kinder S James: audio visual device are device which can be used to make the learning more effective, more concrete, more realistic and more dynamic.

Audio visual aid is the combination of two media:

AUDIO AIDS: Instructional device through which message can be heard but not seen. Example; radio, CD players etc.

VISUAL AIDS: Instructional device through which message can be seen but not heard. Example; posters, flash cards, charts etc.

AUDIO VISUAL AIDS: Instructional device through which message can be heard as well as seen. Example; television, LCD project, Film projector,

IMPORTANCE (ADVANTAGES) OF AUDIO VISUAL AIDS

·       Helps to convey meaning clearly

·       Helps to attract the attention of audience

·       Helps to make teaching realistic

·       Helps to create interest in the learner

·       It provides realistic approach and experience.

·       Develops imaginative thinking power.

·       supply a concrete basis for conceptual thinking

DISADVANTAGES OF AUDIO VISUAL AIDS

·       Students distraction

·       Expensive

·       Time consuming

·       Need space

TYPES OF AUDIO VISUAL AIDS

There are three different types of Audio-visual aids.

1.Projected Aids: A Projected aid is one which items to be perceived are projected on screen using mechanical devices. FILM PROJECTED ON a wide screen using a film projector is a typical example. These aids are found to be very effective because movement can be added to sounds and hence a realistic experience can be provided.

Example; film projector, film strip projector, slide projector, episcope etc.

2.Non projected Aids: Aids which do not help in their projection on the screen are called non projected aids. Non projected aids are classified into graphic aids, display boards, three dimensional aids and audio aids.

Example; chalk board, charts, models, etc.

3.Activity Aids: There are certain learning situations in which student participation through direct experiences can be easily incorporated, these are called activity aids. The activity teaching aids are really of great value as they put students in a role of active seekers of knowledge.

Example: Field trip, Demonstrations, Experiments, Dramatizations etc.
